The Prophet reprimands Mu’adh for reciting too long in congregational prayer
Jabir ibn Abdullah, Allah is please with him, reported: Mu’adh ibn Jabal, Allah is please with him, would pray with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and then go to lead his people in prayer. Once he was leading the prayer while reciting Surah Al-Baqarah. A man left the prayer and offered his prayer separately and he went away. When Mu’adh heard about him, he said, “He is a hypocrite!” Later, the man heard what Mu’adh had said about him, so he came to the Prophet and he said, “O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we are people who work with our hands and irrigate with our camels. Last night Mu’adh led us in prayer while reciting Surah Al-Baqarah for such a long time that I offered my prayer separately, so for that he accused me of hypocrisy.” The Prophet ﷺ called Mu’adh and he said to him three times, “O Mu’adh! Are you putting people to trial? Recite: By the sun and its brightness (91:1). Or recite: Glorified is the name of your Lord the Exalted.” (87:1)
