Thankfulness is one of the greatest means for the perpetuation of blessings. The essence of thankfulness is expressing appreciation for the blessings God has bestowed upon us. Imam Raghib al-Isfahani mentioned that this is of three types: “The thankfulness of the heart, which lies in acknowledging the blessing; The thankfulness of the tongue, which lies in praising the one who has bestowed the blessing; and thankfulness of the rest of the body, which lies in repaying the blessing.”
This latter duty is fulfilled by worship. When asked by ‘Aisha رضي الله عنها why he was praying so fervently by night — until his feet were swollen and cracking — the Prophet ﷺ replied, “Should I not love to be a thankful servant?”
